Can I use Champix to quit smoking?

Currently Champix is unavailable, however, there are lots of other stop smoking aids available to you, such as NRT products. Your stop smoking practitioner will work with you to find the most suitable stop smoking aid for you.

I’m interested in the Exercise on Prescription programme but I’ve never been to a gym before. Is this an issue?

How often will I have contact with a physical activity coach?

This will be slightly different depending on which pathway you sign up for. For our one-to-one pathway, you will receive 6 sessions with a physical activity coach, often spread over around 12 weeks. Our group pathway consists of 6 weekly group activity sessions led by one of our coaches. On both of these pathways, clients have access to their coach’s email and phone details so they can ask for advice and support between sessions. For our exercise on prescription pathway, in addition to free access to the gym for 12 weeks, you will also receive a minimum of 3 one-to-one sessions with a qualified gym instructor to support you.

Will strength training make me really muscular?

The short answer to this question is a simple “no”. It takes years, often decades for bodybuilders to gain the amount of muscle they have. Strength exercises have been shown to increase bone density, joint stability as well as muscular strength and are an essential part of all exercise plans, no matter your age, gender or physical ability.

What type of exercises do the 1-to-1 and group sessions consist of?

Both the 1-to-1 and group sessions will consist of a mixture of strength training and cardio exercises. Our expert team of physical activity coaches will also make sure there is something for everyone and will provide seated and standing options of varying intensities.

Which Move More pathway is best for me?

When you sign up you'll receive a call from a lovely member of our support team. They will chat you through each of the Move More pathways and help you make the right decision for you. We are confident that we have something for everyone. So, whether you would prefer a 1-to-1 programme to do at home, or you would prefer to work out in a group, or at the gym, we have something for you.

How hard will I be working on the 1-to-1 and group programmes?

We encourage you to initially work at a level which is comfortable for you. We aim to support you in implementing an active lifestyle in the long term, so putting yourself off by working an uncomfortably high intensity is not advised. Your coach will educate you on the use of the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale to quantify how exercise feels and ensure you’re working at the right level to make progress, without causing unnecessary discomfort.

Will I get any resources to help me make changes along the way?

Yes! For our 1-to-1 sessions you will receive an exercise booklet and personalised exercise plan. Our exercise booklet contains a full range of different exercises at different intensities. As for our group sessions, you’ll not only receive the exercise booklet, but you’ll also receive a free resistance band too! This can be used during our sessions for some of the exercises involved.

How much exercise do I need to do?

Research has shown that any increase in physical activity levels can have a significant positive impact on health, so we encourage our clients to gradually increase their activity rather than doing too much too soon. However, over the course of your physical activity pathway your coach will encourage you to work towards a target of at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. This amount of activity has been shown to significantly improve health in the longer term.

When is the best time to exercise?

The answer to this question will differ from person to person as there is no specific time of the day which is significantly more beneficial for exercise. We recommend you instead ask yourself which is the best time for you? We encourage you to find the most suitable time of the day or week which allows you to exercise consistently and regularly, aiming to build a routine for activity. Whether that be mornings, evenings or during the TV ad breaks, if you complete more activity than you used to, no matter how little, you will make progress towards achieving your goals.

What equipment do I need for the programmes? Do I need to buy weights or other equipment?

Both our 1-to-1 and group programmes require little to no equipment. All of our exercises can be completed at home utilising things you will find around the house. The only common piece of equipment required is a chair (a dining room chair is best). If you would like to increase the intensity of an exercise and introduce the use of weights, this can simply be achieved by using tinned foods or bottles of water instead.

I have a certain health condition that affects my mobility can I still join the 1-to-1 and group sessions?

Absolutely! It is never too late to start exercising! Some people say they can’t exercise because of their arthritis, but we see some of the greatest benefits in people with arthritis. Exercise can help you not only lose weight, but it can reduce pain, increase range of motion, strength and mobility. We have a range of different exercises that can be performed both seated and standing. Our coaches take all medical conditions into consideration when designing exercise plans, allowing them to create safe and effective exercise programmes for all.

What happens after the league finishes?

There is a cup night where the winner of the league receives a trophy, certificates and some medals each, but individual prizes are also available for those who have lost the most weight! If you really enjoyed the league and felt it was beneficial, you can join the following league costing £25 to £30 a month depending on location.

How do we win the league?

The league table is made of a combination of football scores and the bonus goals from your weekly weigh ins. You can earn bonus weight loss goals by losing as a team (the more of you who lose, the higher the goal bonus), by losing for three weeks you get a hat trick, which is worth another goal and by reaching your 5% and 10% targets. Be warned – you can also lose your team goals by going above your starting weight or by forgetting to bring your Handbook to the weekly weigh ins. Never forget: the football is important but the most vital thing about the scheme is losing weight and getting healthier.

What equipment do I need?

Appropriate footwear with trainers or studs, ask at your location for full details of the best footwear for the surface. You must wear shin pads and remove all jewellery before games otherwise you will not be allowed to play. An official MAN v FAT Football kit is always a good look - www.shop.manvfat.com

What happens if I register for a League with a waiting list?

Once all teams on a league reach capacity, we start a waiting list for another league. If anyone drops out of the league then you can join the league that is already going at any point. You won't get a reduced experience, as the leagues automatically roll on, so you will be part of the next season as well. We fill these places in first come first serve order* so the sooner you join up the more likely you are to get a place. *When a space becomes free we'll offer it to the waiting player who registered first, but if we don't hear back from him we'll offer it to the next on the list.

What happens when I sign up?

First of all - as soon as you join up the system should send you a Welcome email which answers all of your questions. If you haven’t seen that email then check your spam folder as it will almost certainly be there. What happens next is that before the league begins you’ll be added to a league WhatsApp group and given info about the registration session. The registration session is an entire week before the games begin and is so that you can meet your new team mates, give them the info they need (height, weight, etc) and ask any questions you might have (what boots I should wear, etc). In short, don’t worry – they’ll be in touch before the league begins. If you want to check when your registration sessions is then have a look at your league homepage.

How fit do I need to be? What if I'm coming back from an injury?

MAN v FAT Football have worked with a variety of guys, from ages 18 up to 60 and over and up to a BMI of 50+ because it’s suitable for all types of fitness. You can join a non-playing role and no one will ever expect you to kick a ball throughout the whole league – you can still be a productive member of the team if you turn up and weight in every week and lose weight. You’ll contribute goals galore that way. The games are slower, yes slower, not slow. They are still competitive, and players do put a lot of effort into the games, but these leagues are exclusively for men who want to lose weight. The teams often have roll-on, roll-off subs, so if you’re tired, take a break! Be sensible and exercise at your own pace. You want to start slowly and build up over the weeks. The worst thing you want to do is push yourself too hard and aggravate injuries.

Can I join on my own or do I need to get a team together?

Approximately 80% of players join on their own. We put you into teams and help you to get to know the other players. Equally, if you have friends, colleagues or family who also want to lose weight then join with them and you can be in the same team. We even pay you a fiver for every player you introduce to the league.

What if I work shifts and am going to miss weeks, can I still join?

Once you sign up, that place is yours, even if you miss games - but bear in mind you can’t get credit for games you miss. To get the benefit of the structure, they recommend missing no more than 4 games in 14 (the length of the average season). Each week you’re missing, you get an email to see how you’re doing. You can click a link to say when you’ll be back. If you don’t click the link, you’ll be marked as AWOL and if you’re marked as AWOL for more than three weeks with no contact, they may offer your space to a new starter, so make sure you let them know if you’re just away for a short while.

Can I visit a league in action, before I join?

If you look at the league page for the league you’re looking to join on the MAN v FAT Football website, you’ll see that there’s an option to email the coach to arrange a visit. Go to the homepage for the league you’re looking to join and you’ll see there’s an option to email the coach to arrange a visit. We welcome players to come down and see what we’re up to and make sure that you feel comfortable. We welcome players to go down and see what happens. Be warned though - they’ve never had anyone come down for a visit and not join!

Where are the leagues running in Lincolnshire?

There are 4 leagues running in Lincolnshire: Lincoln Wednesday Evening (Yarborough Leisure Centre), Boston Friday Evening (Peter Paine Sports Centre) Skegness Tuesday Evening (The Pavilion, Wainfleet Road) and Grantham Monday Evening (Meres Leisure Centre)

What happens after the 12-week programme?

After completing the core 12-week programme, you can continue to be a Second Nature member in the sustain programme where you can practice the healthy habits you have acquired in the first 12 weeks, as well as work towards new goals. You'll receive continued support from your health coach and group, ongoing access to your app and tech, extra educational content, new recipes and access to the Second Nature community. After the sustain period, you can go on to access further support, where you can choose a 4 week programme which focuses on areas such as; motivation, mindset, nutrition etc.

How much exercise is involved in this programme?

It is designed to be flexible and can be adjusted to your needs. Second Nature encourage you to increase your activity based on your average steps per day (recorded on your watch) during the first two weeks of the programme. They also encourage exercising in some strength based activities, but your Health Coach will be able to offer further advice.

What does Second Nature recommend nutritionally?

Second Nature don’t focus on counting calories or points, they help you to understand healthy eating and how to fit great nutrition into your lifestyle, as they believe that is the only way to lose weight and keep it off. They do encourage a low carbohydrate intake, so please do consider this.

Can I use my own fitness watch rather than the second nature one?

Yes, you are able to use your own watch to track your steps. Second Nature will be able to help you to connect your watch to the app.

Is the Health Coach at Second Nature a real person or just a computer system?

The Health Coaches at Second Nature are certified nutrition experts meaning they provide you with accurate and reliable advice around your eating habits and lifestyle. The articles, blogs and top tips they post are there for you to engage with and ask as many questions as you have, so make the most of their knowledge!

How often do I step on the scales?

This depends on what works for you, and your Health Coach at Second Nature will be able to advise you. However, we do know that those who track their weight more frequently (say once a week) are more likely to have positive results on the programme. Keeping an eye each week would be good advice, if this works for you!

How quickly can I start the programme?

After agreeing with One You Lincolnshire that this programme is for you, Second Nature will get in contact and you can then pick a date that you would like to start. Most of the start dates are on a Monday, at the beginning of the week, as a fresh start to things. Most people will receive their equipment in the week proceeding their start date (even if you sign up three weeks in advance), usually on the Wednesday or Thursday.

What equipment will I receive? Do I return it afterwards?

You will receive a tech pack sent to your home address which includes a set of digital scales, a fitness watch, recipe book and handbook. This fantastic support pack is yours to keep forever, there is no need to return it!

How much does the programme cost?

There is no cost involved for you to do this programme, as long as you fit the One You Lincolnshire eligibility criteria. This is a BMI of 30 or more (27.5 BAME individuals) and live or work in Lincolnshire.

How much weight am I likely to lose?

The WW plan is about developing a healthy relationship with food that will get you to goal and also help you stay there long term. Your SmartPoint allowance is tailored to you and is designed to provide an adult with an average weight loss of up to two pounds per week after the first three weeks. This is considered to be a healthy and sustainable rate of weight loss. Rather than focussing on your final goal weight, which can feel too far away, try setting yourself mini goals of the next half stone, or dropping down a clothing size.

What happens at the workshops?

You’ll be welcomed and shown where to register, then introduced to your WW Coach for a Wellness check-in. You will chat about why you’ve joined and what you’re hoping to achieve and set an initial goal. You will receive a set of programme books and then you’ll be ready for the workshop. The discussion part gives you the chance to share ideas, celebrate success and help each other find solutions for any challenges. You can contribute as much or as little as you like. At the end of your first Workshop, you’ll be given an opportunity to ask questions, get to know your WW Coach’s story and meet other new members. Before your next meeting you’ll get a check-in message from your WW Coach to see how you’re getting on, and you’ll also be able to access 24/7 support via the Online Coaches on the website.

Can I attend a Slimming World group to see if it’s for me?

Absolutely. Every new member is invited to sit through a group before they commit to joining. Get in touch with your local consultant to arrange this.

What support outside of group do I get?

You get 24/7 access to the members-only website which has over 1,400 recipes, meal plans, weight loss strategies and more. Alongside this, you can use the members only app which features tools, trackers and more. Your local group may also have their own social media group where you can offer encouragement, support and share experiences with your fellow group members.

If I attend a group, will everyone know how much I weigh?

Absolutely not, that is part of Slimming World’s promise to you. They would only announce your weight change with your permission, and if you would prefer that to be private, just ask your consultant not to announce it to the group.

With the food plans, can I really eat as much free food as I want?

Slimming World say, yes you really can! With Food Optimising your appetite becomes your limit – rather than the number of points/calories you’re allowed. Free foods are foods that you eat in unlimited amounts and with an endless variety of these on offer, you’ll never go hungry and feel guilty about eating again. When you’re free from the fear of hunger and guilt, the urge to overeat will disappear.

What happens when you reach your target weight?

To celebrate your fantastic achievement and to help you maintain your weight loss for life, once you reach your own Personal Achievement Target weight you become a free lifetime member of Slimming World! This means that your membership is absolutely free for life as long as you stay within 3lbs of your target weight. You are encouraged to go to group as often as you can (and at least once every month for a top-up of support and to inspire your friends in group to achieve their dream target too.) Slimming World ask you to weigh in each time you attend to keep an eye on that all-important target. As long as you come to group once every two months, your free access to LifelineOnline continues too.

What sort of target weight do you set?

Slimming world encourage a healthy rate of weight loss of an average of 1-2lbs per week. This is a realistic and achievable goal for most people. Overall, it depends on how much weight you want to lose. Hundreds of thousands of people have found success with Food Optimising, and weight losses range from 7lbs to 10st or more.

How long do the groups last?

Because of your new member talk, your first group usually lasts around 1½ hours; sessions last around an hour each week after that.

Can I change groups over the 12-weeks, or do I have to stay at the same one?

If there's ever a week where you can't get to your usual group, your Consultant will be more than happy to help you find another convenient group to keep your weight loss on track.

How many weeks do I have to use my 12-week voucher?

We understand that you may not be available to attend your group for 12 weeks on the trot, therefore Slimming World kindly allow you 16 weeks to attend 12 groups.

I live in Lincolnshire but very close to the border of the next county. Am I okay to use my voucher at a group out of county?

Yes, as long as you fit the eligibility criteria, which is a BMI of 30 or more (27.5 for BAME) and live or work in Lincolnshire. You will be issued with a voucher and it is then up to you to decide which of your local groups you begin attending.

I’m currently a member at Slimming World, can I stop my membership and join through One You Lincolnshire?

Unfortunately, not. One You Lincolnshire have agreed with Slimming World that you must have been a non-paying member for at least 3 months, before accessing a FREE 12-week voucher from One You Lincolnshire.

What happens after the 12 week programme?

Once you have completed the course with us, we will contact you at 3, 6 and 12 months to see how you’re getting on. Following the course, all clients will still have access to The Other Room Gym, which is our virtual online gym. As a healthy lifestyle service, there are also other pathways your practitioner can discuss with you, if you feel you require further support. We are also looking to implement some maintenance sessions, which your practitioner will be in touch about when they are up and running.

Can I change groups over the 12 weeks, or do I have to stay at the same one?

If your commitments change, you may be able to move to another group if the day/time is suitable for you, but we will have to review this on a case-by-case basis. Once you commit to the 12 week Lose Weight With programme you won’t be able to swap to another weight management provider, such as Slimming World, Second Nature, WW etc.

How do I track my progress?

On a weekly basis as we’re really interested to hear how your week has gone so we can give you the appropriate support. It would be great if you can share with your practitioner your weight (self-reported on a virtual course and taken in person on a face-to-face course), minutes of moderate physical activity, minutes of vigorous physical activity, daily fruit and veg consumption, units of alcohol for the week and a goal to work towards. In addition to this you will receive a weight loss tracker and a workbook and you can record your weight loss progress in these. It’s also important to note how you feel as well, do your clothes feel looser? Do you feel happy? Do you feel energised? Are you sleeping better? All of these things will also show progress.

Will I get any resources to help me make changes along the way?

Throughout the programme there are various resources that will support you to make changes to your lifestyle. Some of these include a workbook, a portion beaker, a food label checker card and more. These are either sent to your home address or handed to you in person at the face-to-face groups.

What support will I receive outside of the group sessions?

There’s lots of support available and it’s up to you how much you access. You can opt to join our private Facebook and WhatsApp pages/groups, as well as the weekly 1-to-1 contact with your practitioner. Progress calls can be arranged as and when you feel you need that bit of extra support as well – we’re here for you! If you’re taking part in the online course, you will receive weekly emails with the course content for you to look back over. You will also have access to The Other Room Gym which is an online physical activity platform with live streamed and saved workouts. The face-to-face course offers a free leisure pass*, which allows you to access the gym, swimming and exercise classes alongside your 12 week programme. *each leisure centre may vary in what they offer.

I know there is exercise involved, but I’ve not exercised in a long time, will this be okay?

Yes, this will be absolutely fine. Exercises can be performed standing or seated with minimal or no equipment. Each exercise will have adaptations for you to choose from, so you can select the most appropriate for you. The exercise is light to moderate (around 4 to 6 out of 10) and will gradually become slightly more challenging each week, hopefully increasing your fitness.

What nutrition topics do you cover and what are your key messages?

The sessions will be delivered by trained practitioners and involve presentations, videos, interactive tasks and lots of discussions. Key topics that we cover are portion sizes, food labels, fats, sugars, habits, snacking and much more! We’re always happy to answer any questions you have, so we’re sure to be able to help. Our key messages focus on having 3 regular meals, aiming for 150 active minutes of activity per week, having 5 a day, reducing screen time, managing portion sizes and cutting down on snacking. Nothing is off limits with this programme; there’s no set ‘diet’ for you to follow. We focus on making small, sustainable changes to your lifestyle.

I am a little bit unsure about group settings. How many people tend to be in the groups?

Group sizes can vary from 15-30 people. We do encourage you to attend every session where possible, to get the most out of the programme. If you don’t feel comfortable accessing the groups face to face, you might feel better joining our online groups, as there is the option for you to participate without your camera on. Where possible though, we love to see your smiley face!

How do you deliver the online groups?

Online groups are delivered using a platform called Zoom. You need an internet connection and access to a laptop, tablet or mobile phone. We tend to run the groups either in the morning (10:00 to 11:30), afternoon (13:00 to 14:30) or evening (18:00 to 19:30). Don’t worry if you’re not overly confident with using Zoom, we do have step-by-step instructions to help you log on and a member of staff will be available for tech support over the first few weeks of the course, if needed.

Where do the face-to-face groups take place?

Traditionally, they are delivered at leisure centres across the county that we work in partnership with. We try to cover as much of the county as possible, but some of our key areas are Lincoln, Gainsborough, Boston, Skegness, Louth, Mablethorpe, Spalding, Grantham and Sleaford.

Is the programme delivered online or face to face?

You can choose either an online or a face-to-face course. Whichever suits you best!

How long is the programme?

The programme lasts for 12 weeks, including an entry appointment, 10 group sessions and an exit appointment. The entry and exit appointments last for roughly 30 minutes and each group session is 90 minutes long. Within the group sessions, the first 60 minutes focuses on a different nutrition topic each week and the final 30 minutes involves taking part in some light intensity physical activity.

How long can I use the app for?

Once you’ve been given your app code you can keep on using the app for as long as you wish.

Do you offer mental health support?

Our Health Coaches are not able to offer any therapeutic interventions, however, they can signpost and support an onward referral to local services if required.

What if I’m struggling and feel as though I need more support? 

Our dedicated team of Health Coaches can refer you to our local treatment service for ongoing support.

How often will I have contact with a Health Coach?

Our Health Coaches offer up to six 1-to-1 sessions. Once you have attended your first session, you and your Health Coach will work out how frequently you will be contacted.

What is an alcohol assessment?

We use a standardised assessment tool to measure your risk of alcohol related harm. This is a short questionnaire that will be asked by your Health Coach.

Do I need to bring anything to my first session with a Health Coach? 

No. You don’t need to bring anything to your first session. Our fantastic team of Health Coaches will first complete an alcohol assessment and each session will be tailored to you.

Can I remain anonymous in a group setting?

Yes. Our groups are currently online. You can choose to have your camera switched on or off and you can choose your own screen name too to remain anonymous.

Can I change my mind about attending groups?

Absolutely. Not everyone wants to throw themselves into a workshop straight away. If you would like to attend a workshop, speak to your Health Coach and they can refer you when you’re ready.

Are these groups “Group Therapy”?

No. Our workshops simply offer advice and information on a range of topics, although we do encourage some healthy discussions.

Will my GP know that I have attended?

We aren’t currently sharing personal data with GP surgeries.

Do I have to have an addiction to alcohol to access support from One You Lincolnshire?

No. One You Lincolnshire is not a treatment service. We offer educational and motivational support to people wishing to make healthier choices around their alcohol use.

Do I have to stop drinking completely?

No. Our support is tailored to your needs, whether you want to cut down, moderate your drinking or stop altogether.

Are there weekend  appointments?

No, we do not currently offer weekend appointments. We have appointments from 8am-8pm Monday – Friday.

What if I don’t like the NRT I am provided?

The Stop Smoking practitioner will monitor how you get on with the products and they can be adjusted in quantity or swapped for another product at any point within your journey.

How long does it take to quit?

The Stop Smoking practitioner will work with you to set a quit date, ideally within two weeks of your first appointment. The full course is 12 weeks in length but by 12 weeks you should be well into your life as a non-smoker.

I am in my 70's, surely there’s no point in stopping now?

What if I’m not a heavy smoker?

Smoking 5 or fewer cigarettes a day can still cause almost as much damage to your lungs as smoking 40 a day.

Can I use an e cigarette?

E-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than smoking. We don't supply them as part of the course but we can support your quit attempt with you through behaviour change if you choose to purchase and use an e-cigarette.

My mate’s mum stopped smoking but still died within 3 months, what is the point?

Smoking can mask a lot of health problems due to lack of oxygen in the bloodstream. Problems come to light when you stop but this means that they can be treated more quickly once diagnosed.

Aren't Nicotine replacement products as addictive as smoking?

Most people who use NRT products do not become dependent on them as most people don't use them for long enough. Those who do use them long term will find that they are still considerably less harmful than smoking.

Can I use NRT products while pregnant?

Yes, you can use a nicotine replacement therapy and its less harmful than smoking. Ideally, we like to use as least amount of NRT as we can. Our practitioner can discuss the best option for you.

What is the carbon monoxide that comes from my cigarettes?

Carbon monoxide is a gas created by anything that burns. As the cigarette burns, it goes into your system and binds to your red blood cells which usually carry oxygen around the body. This means there is less capability for the body to carry oxygen, as the cells are now full with carbon monoxide.

Can I go to my  local pharmacy as they advertise stop smoking?

We work closely with local pharmacies who have staff trained to deliver smoking cessation on behalf of One You Lincolnshire. You can use NHS Smokefree to find your nearest support location.

I work different shift patterns, how can I have appointments?

our practitioner will find an appointment to suit you. We also have a dedicated telephone service that operate in the evenings and Saturday mornings.

What is the point of using nicotine? It's just the same as smoking, isn't it?

Nicotine isn't the cancer-causing, harmful substance in a cigarette, so it can be safely used to help quit smoking.

What is the best thing to use to quit?

It’s whichever option works best for you, whether that is NRT or prescribed medication, alongside determination and behavioural change, all supported by your stop smoking practitioner. Statistically, 65% of people quit that use NRT with support.

How long do I have to use the products for?

Ideally, it's a 12-week programme, and we do advise all pharmocotherapy to be used for 12 weeks, to ensure a successful quit.

How much does it cost?

NRT is free and if you decide to go with Zyban, it’s a 12-week course and you pay a prescription charge every 2 weeks, unless you’re exempt from these charges.

Why should I come  to a stop smoking service when I can buy Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) from the shop?

Research shows you have a better chance of stopping and staying stopped with the support from your local stop smoking service.

Can I just cut  down?

Setting a quit date and stopping is a better option as research shows that you’re more likely to quit and stay quit. We’re commissioned to support those who are aiming to stop smoking completely.
