Did you know if you’re over 40 you might be eligible for a FREE NHS health check? Your NHS health check can help detect underlying health conditions early.

What Is An NHS Health Check?

  • A 20-40 minute appointment at your GP practice.
  • Includes height and weight measurements, BMI check and a blood test.
  • Conducted by a Healthcare Assistant or nurse.

WHY DO I NEED ONE?

  • An NHS Health Check can help spot any underlying health conditions (like high blood pressure).
  • It can help you take precautions against other conditions (like Covid-19).
  • It can help monitor your heart health.

Does my ethnicity matter?

Did you know your risk of developing certain health conditions can vary depending on your ethnicity? 

  • South Asians have a higher rate of heart attack than non-South Asians.
  • Black ethnic groups have a higher rate of stroke than white ethnic groups.
  • Black Caribbean, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi men have a higher rate of diabetes than other ethnic groups.

What Can I Expect During my Appointment?

  • You'll be asked a few questions about your lifestyle and family history.
  • Your height and weight will be measured to calculate your BMI, as well as your blood pressure.
  • You’ll have a blood test (could be a simple prick test) either during your appointment or separately.
  • You’ll be given more information about your risk of certain underlying health conditions.
  • You’ll be given your heart age in comparison to your current age, to help you understand how healthy your heart is.
  • The nurse can give you healthy lifestyle advice and let you know about any measures you can take or support you can receive to boost your health.
